Lotte Zero Choco Pie 336g: The Technical Problem Was the Marshmallow

Lotte Zero Choco Pie 336g has a better product story than “a lower-sugar version of Choco Pie.” Lotte Wellfood spent **two years** working on a part of the product that normally depends heavily on sugar: the marshmallow.

LOTTE Zero Choco Pie 336g

Lotte launched Zero Choco Pie in October 2024 under the Zero brand it had started in 2022. At launch, the company described it as a Choco Pie made without sugar or sugar-containing ingredients in the chocolate and marshmallow system and explained that reproducing the sweetness and chewy marshmallow texture without conventional sugar was the main development challenge.

The current Korean retail pack is 336g and contains 12 pieces, so each piece is 28g. Current Korean product information lists 110 kcal per piece, 0g sugars and 11g sugar alcohols per 28g serving. That last number is important. “Zero sugars” does not mean the formula contains no sweet-tasting carbohydrate substitutes or that the product should be marketed as medically suitable for any condition.

KCN lists Lotte Zero Choco Pie 336g, barcode 8802259019121, under Cakes & Pies with the tag Zero / Sugar-Free.

The “Zero” claim is part of the legal product, not a loose marketing adjective

An importer has to separate the Korean claim from the destination-country claim rules. Korea’s domestic label can say what the Korean regulations allow. Another country may use different definitions, thresholds or mandatory statements for “sugar free,” “zero sugar,” sugar alcohols or nutrition claims.

The safest export process is to obtain the exact current nutrition and ingredient file, then let the destination regulator or label specialist determine how the front-of-pack claim can be reproduced.

Current Korean retail data identifies the product as a chocolate-processed food and lists the manufacturing site as Lotte Wellfood’s Yangsan facility. It also gives a six-month shelf life from manufacture and a storage instruction to keep the product in a cool place away from direct sunlight and moisture.

Sugar alcohols are technically important to the importer

A 28g piece is currently declared at 110 kcal with 0g sugars and 11g sugar alcohols. Those numbers show why the product cannot be explained simply as “ordinary Choco Pie with the sugar removed.”

The formulation had to replace functional properties that sugar contributes to sweetness and texture, particularly in marshmallow. That is the engineering story Lotte itself emphasized during launch.

It also means the label team needs the exact sweetener and sugar-alcohol declaration for the destination market. Some countries require specific warnings or have different calculation rules for nutrition panels.

The allergen file is more complicated than the front of the box suggests

Current Korean retail declarations list wheat, soy, milk, peanut, egg, pork and beef among the relevant allergens or ingredients requiring notice.

That immediately affects halal and vegetarian assumptions. Zero Choco Pie should never be described as suitable for either audience from the word “Zero” alone.

This also makes the product a good internal example for KCN: consumer-facing claims and import-facing specifications are different layers of the same SKU. The front says Zero. The buyer file needs the complete formulation, allergens, production site, shelf life and claim substantiation.

Twelve small pieces create a different retail equation from Orion’s 39g Choco Pie

Lotte Zero Choco Pie is 28g per piece, while Orion’s current standard Choco Pie is 39g per piece. They should not be compared only by box price or total grams. The product concept, serving size and claim architecture are different.

A distributor may carry both in the same market for different reasons. The Zero product can occupy a sugar-claim-led section, while a conventional Choco Pie remains the standard item. The final decision depends on landed cost and the destination’s labeling rules.

For KCN, the verified reference is 336g, 12 pieces of 28g, barcode 8802259019121, Zero / Sugar-Free tag. KCN should confirm its current commercial carton count separately before publishing one.
